Here are some important facts about this amazing creation

Location: It runs through the Tianshan Mountains in China’s northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

Length: The tunnel is 22.13 kilometers long, making it the world’s longest highway tunnel.

Time saving: It used to take several hours to cross this mountainous region, but the new tunnel has reduced that time to 20 minutes.

Overall project: This is a major part of the 324.7-kilometer-long G0711 Urumqi-Yuli Expressway. It will reduce the travel time between the cities of Urumqi and Korla from 7 hours to 3 hours.

Engineering Challenges: The tunnel is located in a remote mountainous area more than 4,000 meters above sea level, and was built over a period of about five years, amidst extreme cold and geological complexities.

Investment: The entire highway project has been invested in 46.7 billion yuan (about 6.63 billion US dollars).

In addition, China also opened the Taihu Tunnel, China's longest "underwater" highway tunnel, at 10.79 kilometers in 2021.
